Based on the project of the ‘the Leading Initiative for Excellent Young Researchers”(LEADER)by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Tokai University, hereinafter referred to as “Our University”, is currently recruiting a tenure track researcher position at the TOKAI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF INNOVATIVE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (IIST) that will be employed in November, 2019.

Tokai University, established by founder, Dr. Shigeyoshi Matsumae in 1942, is a comprehensive university with 19 schools. Adapting the founder’s ideals, Tokai University has pursued innovation with harmonizing the sciences and the humanities. Based on our founding spirit of the schools, our university seeks a perspective researcher who makes a study of high impact research theme, and can contribute to the future of advanced and transdisciplinary research, considering productive and international collaboration activities across different research fields, and capability of mentoring young researchers in the next generation.

The researcher of Institute of Innovative Science and Technology (IIST), who will be tenured in the IIST or in the School related research fields after approved by the review committee, should contribute to research, examining economic policy to solve urgent economic problems in Japan, as well as public and labor policies, and considering productive and international collaboration activities across different research fields.

Having these perspectives in the specialized field, Tokai University seeks an excellent researcher who can contribute his/her international research activities with broad research and education activities beyond existing academic field. If you are interested in this field, you can apply even if the current research field is different. Job type is Lecturer, and it will be assigned the position in the latter half of the 2019 academic year.

Duties

  1. Perform research activities based on the research application.
  2. Teach undergraduate and/or graduate school students. including overseas students.
  3. Supervise graduate students for their research, thesis.
  4. Publish research papers.
  5. Make presentations at academic meetings, including international conferences.
  6. Make efforts to obtain external research funding.
  7. Contribute to the activities of the IIST
  8. Commit symposiums sponsored or co-hosted by the Institute.
  9. Other services requested by the Institute

A tenure track researcher in the IIST will be evaluated on the mid-term performance evaluation in the third fiscal year, will be judged at the strict review to be performed annually upon researcher’s own request (the review in the fifth fiscal year is final). If the researcher passes through these strict reviews, the one will be hired as a full-time tenured position (Lecturer) at school or research institution. Or it will be available as a full-time position if his/her research performance is excellent.
Upon successful final screening for employment at Tokai University, the researcher will be assigned as full-time position starting from April,2023. If his/her research performance is not met with necessary requirements of the IIST program in the five years, the position of full time employment is discussed by reviewing his/her research works.
Renewable annually up to five years (until March, 2023) in principle with tenured position according to our review process.

Salary

Annual salary system
Payment will be made in accordance with the University’s rules and regulations.
Approximately 6,000,000 yen per year in case of tenured track position, Lecture (Non Doctor’s License), will be provided and will pay monthly with equal distribution of 12 months.

Research Support and Others

Up to 4,000,000 yen per annum as a research fund for two fiscal years will be offered by the MEXT LEADER project. 2,000,000 yen as a research fund will be offered for the third fiscal year, and from the fourth year, 500,000 yen will be deducted every year from the amount of the research fund granted in the previous year.

  1. Office space of approximately 36m2 will be provided for each researcher.
  2. Core research facilities are available for tenure track researchers in Tokai University.
  3. Researchers can receive supports from mentor staffs (full-time teaching staff) or office support staff. The Institute is ready to support female researchers.

This recruitment is conducted by the Application Guidelines of “Leading Initiative for Excellent Young Researchers (LEADER)” by MEXT.

  1. For the applicant in the list of the LEADER project selected by MEXT, who will apply for the tenure track program of IIST, Tokai University, we will conduct the university’s own screening for employment (i.e., document review and interview and presentation) and then, negotiation among the parties will take place.
  2. The applicant is requested to submit application forms under the LEADER by MEXT to Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) through the website and also send them to Tokai University via e-mail.
  3. Application documents review (May-June, 2019)
  4. Interviews and presentations(schedule in July, 2019)
    1. Conduct in English.
    2. Applicants who have obtained significant research funding for their research activities, ongoing or who are currently applying or are planning to apply, should make references to those research plans for the presentations.
    3. Each candidate will be informed of further details of interviews and presentations at a later date.
    4. Expenses for applicants stay, travel to Tokai University etc., must be paid by applicants themselves.
