Based on the project of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), ‘the Leading Initiative for Excellent Young Researchers http://www.mext.go.jp/a_menu/jinzai/takuetsu/ Tokai University, hereinafter referred to as “Our University”, are currently recruiting a tenure track researcher position at the TOKAI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF INNOVATIVE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (IIST) that will be employed in 2016.

Continuing in the spirit of the school’s founder, one of deep philosophies which Tokai University pursues is an innovation with harmonizing literature, science and technology. Tokai University, is currently recruiting a tenure track researcher at the TOKAI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF INNOVATIVE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (IIST), starting to be employed in the latter half of fiscal year of 2016. Our university is seeking a person who makes a study of a high impact research theme, primarily related to Humanities Field, and can contribute to the future of advanced and Transdisciplinary research, considering productive and international collaboration activities across different research fields.

The researcher of IIST, who will be tenured in School of Letters or Institute of Civilization Research after approved by the review committee, should work in leading-edge and international research of history and civilization between mainly European countries and Japan, maintaining high levels of research and education for students and the upcoming generation of researchers.

Please note that this recruitment scheme is based on the project of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), ‘the Leading Initiative for Excellent Young Researchers http://www.mext.go.jp/a_menu/jinzai/takuetsu/. The applicant should be required to follow the guidelines of the MEXT project linked above. Application forms (formats #3~#6) must be submitted between April 11th and May 9th, 2016 (no later than 17:00 Japan Standard Time, May 9th, 2016) through e-rad (http://www.erad.go.jp) system.

Qualification Requirements:

  • The person who is selected as an excellent young researcher candidate of the LEADER project.

Term of Employment

From latter half of the fiscal year of 2016 – Mar 31, 2021 on an annual contract basis (Please refer to” Requirement to Full-time University Staff”)

NOTE:The documents submitted shall not be returned.

Deadline

The deadline information will be informed to each applicant individually, after the LEADER candidate list will be announced from MEXT or the review organization.

In addition to the application documents via e-mail, a hard copy of original documents must be sent by mail with delivery confirmation (registered mail, etc.) to prove its delivery by the submission deadline.
Applications received after the deadline will not be processed for selection.

Selection

For the applicant in the list of the LEADER project who would like to apply the tenure track program of IIST, Tokai University, our university will perform the university’s own screening for employment (i.e., document review and interview and presentation), later.

  1. Application documents review
    The results will be informed individually.
  2. Interviews and presentations(scheduled in July, 2016)

    1. Conduct in English.
    2. Applicants who have obtained significant research funding for their research activities, ongoing or who are currently applying or are planning to apply, should make reference to those research plans for the presentations.
    3. Candidates will be informed of further details of interviews and presentations at a later date.
    4. Expense for applicants stay, travel to Tokai University and etc., must be paid by applicants themselves.

Duties

Perform research activities based on the research plan submitted at the time of application.
Teach some undergraduate and/or graduate school classes related to your research areas. (Includes classes in English)
Provide guidance on research activities and writing thesis for graduate school students including overseas students.
Write and publish research papers.
Make presentations at academic meetings, including international conferences.
Work actively to obtain external research funding. (Tenure track researchers are allowed to engage in research for competitive research funding during the term of their employment.)
Contribute to the activities of the TOKAI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF INNOVATIVE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY.
Make presentations at symposiums sponsored or co-hosted by the Institute.
Other duties considered necessary by the Director of the Institute.

Working Conditions

Work location is basically in the Shonan campus of Tokai University.

Overseas resident applicants will receive support in securing accommodation as required.
The employment conditions and regulations of the Tokai University educational system shall apply as deemed appropriate.
Intellectual property rights for inventions made during the period of employment shall belong to the Tokai University Educational System in accordance with the University’s regulations on the handling of intellectual property rights.

Annual Salary System
Payment will be made in accordance with the University’s rules and regulations.

Research Support and Others

Up to 4,000,000 yen per annum as a research fund for two fiscal years will be offered by the MEXT LEADER project. 2,000,000 yen as a research fund will be offered for the third fiscal year, and from the fourth year, 500,000 yen will be deducted every year from the amount of the research fund granted in the previous year.
Office space of approximately 20m2 will be provided for each researcher.
Core research facilities are available for tenure track researchers in our University.
Researchers can receive supports from mentor staffs (full-time teaching staff) or office support staff. The Institute is ready to accept female researchers.

Requirement to Full-time University Staff

A tenure track researcher accepted in this time recruits will be evaluated on the mid-term performance evaluation of the third fiscal year, and will be evaluated at the strict review to be performed annually upon researcher’s own request(the review of the fifth fiscal year is final). If the researcher passes through these strict reviews, the researchers will be appointed as a full-time lecturer or associate professor (or a full-time professor in the superior case). In these cases, the researchers will be assigned to schools and departments of our University where her/his expertise can be fully executed from April, 2021 (basically in School of Letters or Institute of Civilization Research). In general, a tenure track researcher who is recognized to be qualified on the final review will be appointed as a full-time tenured position, but in case the researcher is recognized to have made exceptional research accomplishment, the researcher may be assigned to a full-time tenure position even if in less than five year.
