Tokai University, hereinafter referred to as “Our University”, is currently recruiting a tenure track research position for 2013 at the TOKAI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF INNOVATIVE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (IIST) under a mentor researchers’ development program that cultivates researchers who can conduct world-class research. This recruitment is being carried out under the “Improvement of Research Environment for Young Researchers Program” (from FY2010 through FY2014) supported by the Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan. Available Position
One tenure track research position
* Academic rank (Assistant Professor or Associate Professor) will be determined by impartial judging by the panel of distinguished academics.
Research Field
Areas related to Geophysics (Geo-electromagnetics (including Submarine Resource Research), Atmospheric Physics, Remote Sensing (including Natural Hazards Monitoring and Forecast), Physical Volcanology, Seismo-Electromagnetism, etc.) and Marine Sciences (Physical Oceanology, Marine Geology, Marine Biology, etc.)
Qualification Requirements
- As of October 1, 2013, applicants are required to have:
- A doctoral degree (obtained within 10 years), or have scholarly achievement equivalent to persons who have completed a doctoral course.
a doctoral degree (obtained preferably within 10 years), - more than 3 years of work experience as an assistant professor, a postdoctoral fellow or an equivalent position,
and significant accomplishments in research.
- A doctoral degree (obtained within 10 years), or have scholarly achievement equivalent to persons who have completed a doctoral course.
- Under 40 years old at the time of application, because the program has been supported under the contract of “Program to Disseminate Tenure Tracking System” by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in the fiscal year of 2012.
Preferably to be under 45 years old at the time of application (considering the purpose of young researcher cultivation). - Japanese language ability is not required, but most communication while on the tenure-track is in Japanese or English.
- Applicants should not fall within any of the categories of ineligibility set out in the Article 9 of the School Education Law, JAPAN.
Term of Employment
From October 1, 2013 through March 31, 2018 on an annual contract basis.
Researchers who are recognized as having made exceptional research accomplishments by the midterm evaluation in 2015, can be promoted, or may be assigned to a tenure position if they receive a superior evaluation.

a) Include in your summary of research achievements a list of books, peer-reviewed papers, articles presented at international conferences, commentaries, review papers and h-index. Please also specify keynote speeches and invited guest lectures in the list if any. b) A list of activities in academic conferences and societies, contributions to education, and acquired patents. c) A summary of past research activities. (Approx. two pages. Diagrams may be included.) d) A research plan. (Approx. three pages, with a separate page of plan timetable. Diagrams may be included.) e) Comments regarding the future potential of your research plan, including statement of teaching philosophy. (Approximately one page. Diagrams may be included.) f) A list of external research funding obtained to date. (Specify any representative or partners in the funding if any, and the funding allocated to the applicant.) g) A list of the three referees with their addresses and contact information. - Five representative papers.
- Three letters of recommendation or reference from the referees listed in “g)” (to be sent directly by the referees to us).

Selection
- 1st screening: application documents review (The results will be informed to applicants around June 2013.)
- 2nd screening (for qualifiers only):
- Interviews and presentations in English to be conducted from June 2013.
- Applicants who have obtained significant research funding for their research activities, or who are currently applying or are planning to do so should make reference to those research plans for the presentations.
- Candidates will be notified of further details of interviews and presentations at a later date.

Assigned Courses
Courses at the Undergraduate and/ or Graduate levels that are related to your research area.
Duties
- Research activities based on the research plan submitted at the time of application.
- Teach some undergraduate and/ or graduate school classes related to your research areas. (Includes classes in English).
- Provide guidance on research activities and writing thesis for graduate school students including overseas students.
- Write and publish research papers.
- Presentations at academic meetings, including international conferences.
- Work actively to obtain external research funding. (Tenure track researchers are allowed to engage in research for competitive research funding during the term of their employment.)
- Contribution to the activities of the Institute (Tokai University-IIST).
- Research results presentation at symposiums sponsored or co-hosted by the Institute (Tokai University-IIST).
- Other duties considered necessary by the Director of the Institute (Tokai University-IIST).
Working Conditions
- Work location is the Shimizu campus of Tokai University.

- The employment conditions and regulations of the Tokai University educational system shall apply as deemed appropriate.
- Intellectual property rights for inventions made during the period of employment shall belong to the Tokai University Educational System in accordance with the University’s regulations on the handling of intellectual property rights.
Salary
Payment will be made in accordance with the University’s rules and regulations.
Research Support and Others
- 3,000,000 yen as a start-up fund and a research fund will respectively be provided in the first fiscal year, and 2,500,000 yen of research fund will be given in the second year. These research funds may increase. During the tenure track period, researchers will be fully supported by the Institute to obtain external research funding.
- Individual laboratory space and office space of approximately 36m2 each will be provided for each researcher. The layout and other aspects of these spaces are subject to change depending on your research field.
- A common research facility in the University.
- Researchers can receive support from mentor staff (full-time teaching staff) or support staff.
- We are fully set up to accept female researchers.
- Technical and clerical assistance is available.
Requirement to Full-time University Staff
If you, recruited at this time, are deemed sufficiently competent after your midterm evaluation in the third year and final evaluation in the fifth year, you will be hired as a full-time assistant professor or associate professor (or professor if having outstanding performance) from April 2018. You will be assigned to schools and departments of our University where your expertise can be fully executed. In case you are recognized as having made exceptional research accomplishments and receive a superior evaluation at the midterm evaluation in the third year, you may be assigned to a tenure position even if in less than five years.
* Mandatory retirement age in Japan will also be applicable to university tenured staff in accordance with the employment conditions and regulations of the Tokai University.
