Under the tenure-track program supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan, Tokai University, hereinafter referred to as “Our University”, is currently recruiting a tenure-track researcher at the TOKAI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF INNOVATIVE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (IIST) that will begin employment in 2017.

Continuing in the spirit of the school’s founder, one of philosophies that Tokai University operates under is a pursuit of innovation that harmonizes literature, science and technology. Tokai University is currently recruiting a tenure-track researcher at the TOKAI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF INNOVATIVE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (IIST), starting employment in the latter half of fiscal year of 2017. Our University is seeking applicants whose research is of high impact, is in a Social Science field, and can contribute to the future of advanced and transdisciplinary research. The successful applicant will engage in productive and international collaboration across different research fields.

The successful applicant will be granted tenure in the Research Institute of Social Science or in the School that is most relevant to their research fields following approval by the review committee. Priority will be given to applicants who conduct innovative research of social systems and economic policies such as pensions, medical care and welfare programs, in particular, detailed research on the social systems in Nordic countries and/or Japan that have faced the graying of the population resulting in an aged society. Such analysis might illuminate solutions that can directly lead to policy impacts on Japanese social systems and economic policies. The researcher should be committed to providing high quality research and education for students and must be able to train the upcoming generation of researchers.

Please note that this recruitment scheme is based on the project of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), ‘the Leading Initiative for Excellent Young Researchers, LEADER program’ (http://www.mext.go.jp/a_menu/jinzai/takuetsu/). Qualification Requirements

Qualification Requirements:
Applicant who is selected as an excellent young researcher candidate of the LEADER project. Applicants must first follow the guidelines of the MEXT LEADER project (Leading Initiative for Excellent Young Researchers of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT),

Although Japanese language ability is not required, language for daily communication while on the tenure-track will be in Japanese or English.
Applicants should not fall within any of the categories of ineligibility set out by Article 9 of the School Education Law, JAPAN.

Term of Employment

From latter half of the fiscal year of 2017 – Mar 31, 2022 on an annual contract basis (Please refer to” Requirement to Full-time University Staff”)

  2. If the applicant has performed research under project-based research fund or will propose a research project, a copy of the research plan must be submitted.
  3. Copies of three representative papers (Duplicate copy or PDF format is also allowed.)
  4. Additional documents may be requested during the selection process if necessary.

Deadline

The deadline for submission is scheduled for the end of July, 2016. Each applicant will be notified of the specific deadline on an individual basis following the announcement of the LEADER candidate list from MEXT or the review organization.
All documents must be submitted via e-mail as attachments to the TOKAI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF INNOVATIVE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY’s e-mail address, iist-office@tsc.u-tokai.ac.jp by the deadline.
In addition to submitting application documents via e-mail, a hard copy of original documents must be sent by mail with delivery confirmation (registered mail, etc.) to prove its delivery by the submission deadline.

Selection Process

For applicants on the list of the LEADER project who would like to apply to the tenure-track program of IIST, Tokai University will perform the its own screening for employment (i.e., document review, interview and presentation).

  1. Application documents review
  2. Interviews and presentations (to be planned in July 2017 depending on the date when MEXT or the review organization announces the LEADER candidate list)
    1. Both will be conducted in English.
    2. Applicants who have obtained research funding for their research activities, ongoing or who are currently applying or are planning to apply should make reference to those research plans in their presentations.
    3. Candidates will be informed of further details of interviews and presentations at a later date.
    4. Travel to Tokai University, accommodations, and other related expenses will be paid by the applicants.

Duties

Perform research activities based on the research plan submitted at the time of application.
Teach undergraduate and/or graduate school classes related to applicant’s research areas. (Including classes in English)
Provide guidance on research activities and thesis-writing for graduate school students including overseas students. Write and publish research papers.
Make presentations at academic meetings, including international conferences.
Work actively to obtain external research funding. (Tenure-track researchers are allowed to engage in research for competitive research funding during the term of their employment.)
Contribute to the activities of the TOKAI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF INNOVATIVE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY.
Make presentations at symposiums sponsored or co-hosted by the Institute.
Other duties that the Director of the Institute deems necessary.

Working Conditions

Work location centers on the Shonan campus of Tokai University.

Applicants from overseas will receive support in securing accommodations if necessary.
The employment conditions and regulations of the Tokai University educational system shall apply as deemed appropriate.
Intellectual property rights for inventions made during the period of employment shall belong to the Tokai University Educational System in accordance with the University’s regulations on the handling of intellectual property rights.

Salary

Annual Salary System
Payment will be made in accordance with the University’s rules and regulations.

Research Support and Others

Up to 4,000,000 yen per annum as a research fund for two fiscal years will be offered by the MEXT LEADER project.
Office space of approximately 20m2 will be provided for each researcher.
Core research facilities are available for tenure-track researchers in Our University.
Researchers can receive support from mentor staff (full-time teaching staff) or office support staff. The Institute welcomes female researchers.

Requirement to Full-time University Staff

A tenure-track researcher accepted at this time will be evaluated by a mid-term performance evaluation during their third fiscal year and will also be judged according to a strict review that will be performed annually upon researcher’s own request(the fifth fiscal year review is the final one). If the researcher pass these strict reviews, they will be hired as a full-time lecturer or associate professor (or a full-time professor at the superior case). In this case, the researcher will be assigned to schools and departments of our University where their expertise can be fully executed from April 2022. In general, a tenure-track researcher who is recognized as qualified at the final review will be appointed a full-time tenured position. If the researcher is recognized as having made exceptional research accomplishments, they may be assigned to a full-time, tenured position in less than five years.
